Day 2: Mexico City-Tepotztlan - Mexico City, Mexico

Tepoztlan Temple Hike & Altar Making

Today we will depart Mexico City in the morning (around 8:00 am) and travel to the charming “magic town” (or “pueblo magico”) of Tepoztlan to explore the town and the nearby Aztec ruins with a local guide. Considered the birthplace of the Mesoamerican God Quetzalcoatl, this town is an important indigenous site and many people feel that it still holds spiritual sacred energy, drawing many artists and mystics. The town is surrounded by majestic soaring cliffs and the stunning ruins are located at the top of one of these high-altitude lookouts. The hike to the top (about 1 hour) is very steep and can be quite challenging at this high altitude. But for adventurers, this hike is definitely well worth it. If you don’t feel up to it, you’re welcome to continue to explore this lovely town and its lively marketplace. You will also get to see the traditional process of building altars and/or creating the lamps that are central to the vibrant Day of the Dead festivities. You might even get to help out with the production and join in the following celebration! We will return to Mexico City in the early evening, around 6:00 pm.

Day 3: Mexico City, Mexico

Local Market Visit & Day of the Dead Festivities in Mixquic

Today we will have a morning visit to Jamaica market, famous for its ornamental flowers. In addition to the impressive variety of flowers you will also get to see altars and even stop for lunch if you’re feeling peckish (not included). You will then return to your accommodation around midday. Later on in the afternoon, we will visit the town of Mixquic, famous for its vibrant and energetic Day of the Dead festivities. A big part of Day of the Dead is the light-hearted festivities that families organise in the local cemeteries to spend time with their deceased loved ones. The ceremony starts in the afternoon when families colourfully decorate the graves of their loved ones and continues late into the night with parties, music, dancing, and of course a good dose of tequila. Immerse yourself in the spirit as this is sure to be a unique experience!
